CATSEI-TAPSIM workshop in Brussels

At the initiative of the Directorate-General of Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission, the EU-funded projects CATSEI and TAPSIM organized a joint workshop on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 in Brussels. The CATSEI project focuses on the transition processes in China’s agriculture, the TAPSIM project on similar processes in India’s agriculture. In the workshop recent structural changes in the agricultural economy of both countries were addressed, as well as future prospects for supply, demand and trade. With around 60 participants from the policy, research and business community the workshop was very well attended.

The workshop was presided over by Gerrit Meester, chair of the Committee for Agriculture of OECD. CATSEI partner Xiaobo Zhang (IFPRI) gave an introductory presentation in which he compared the changes in the agricultural economies of China and India. The full program of the workshop can be found here.

In the CATSEI time slot, Jikun Huang (Director Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy) gave an overview of China’s agricultural development and agricultural policies in the past three decades whereas Michiel Keyzer (in his capacity as CATSEI project coordinator) presented a summary of findings in the CATSEI project, obtained partly from specific surveys and partly from simulations with the updated Chinagro model.

The presentations by Xiaobo Zhang, Jikun Huang and Michiel Keyzer can be found here. The TAPSIM presentations can be found on www.tapsim.eu.
